As the sun rose over Mishopshno Meadow on the Carpinteria Bluffs, the 28th annual Sunrise Ceremony brought together community members on Sunday, March 22, thanks to the efforts of the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs and Chumash descendant Julie Tumamait-Stenslie.
This spring spiritual observance has taken place every year since 1999. Each year, Tumamait-Stenslie invites both Chumash community members and the public to “bring a poem, story, or song to share in the language of their ancestors,” according to a press release from the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs.
